INTRODUCING BARNEY!

We would like to introduce you to a special new member, and Devon’s Head ‘Countryside Ambassador’ – Barney the Bull! He is our new emblem for children (and those young at heart!) who love Devon’s countryside and wish to protect it. Its such a big task, that Barney is looking for help! He would like primary school children across the county to join him in his task of looking after the countryside and therefore qualify as a Devon Countryside Ambassador!

Barney is of course a traditional Devon breed and, like his friends and family, enjoys being amongst Devon’s lush green pastures, the gently rolling hills and valleys, the riverbanks and hedgerows and sometimes gazing out to sea. He loves Devon’s countryside and wants to protect it for animals, wildlife and people to enjoy too.

As Head Countryside Ambassador, he is wearing one of our new Devon Countryside Ambassador Badges with pride. Would you like to win a Devon Countryside Ambassador badge? These badges can be won by primary school children throughout Devon as prizes in our new Spring writing competition, ‘I Love the Countryside Because…’ or our Summer painting competition ‘My Outdoors’ or by getting involved in litter picking with their schools. CPRE Devon have supported school’s Outdoor Learning for a number of years and we’re looking forward to encouraging more children to learn about and appreciate our green spaces, environment and countryside too – and with Barney’s help! Barney’s BULLetins will be emailed regularly to all Devon’s primary schools, to keep in touch with news and events. Barney’s going to have a busy year!

MY OUTDOORS PAINTING COMPETITION 2018 – RESULTS!

CPRE Devon is delighted to announce the results of this year’s ‘My Outdoors’ competition for primary schoolchildren. We received entries from right across the county from girls and boys who had captured their favourite Devon landscape on paper. All children who entered the competition will win one of Barney’s new Devon Countryside Ambassador Badge

The competition is a fun way to encourage outdoor learning and help young children engage with and enjoy the countryside. Pencils, paints and sticking paste were all put to use to create art works which captured the beauty and variety of Devon’s natural landscapes.

The judges were impressed with the children’s creativity and hard work. They had a hard task choosing between the entries!

Bishops Nympton Primary School near South Molton won ‘Best overall school’ and a prize of £200 towards outdoor learning. East Anstey Primary School on Exmoor and St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Buckfast were both highly commended, winning £50 each towards outdoor learning initiatives.

The individual winners were:
Key Stage 1 – Amelie Willis Smith, aged 5, from Holbeton Primary School. The judges loved her delightful collage The Beach.
Key Stage 2 – Ava Perkins, aged 8, from Clyst Heath Nursery and Community Primary School in Exeter. The judges were impressed by her painting entitled Dartmoor.

There were lots of commendations too for entries from Bishops Nympton, East Anstey, St. Mary’s in Buckfast, Holbeton and Exeter schools Willowbrook, Ladysmith, Wynstream and Clyst Heath.

Thank you to everyone who supported CPRE Devon by entering, and congratulations to all the winners!
